The Ponting Foundation was established by Rianna and Ricky Ponting to raise money for children with cancer and their families.
In 2004, the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia for Medical Research (CCIA) invited Rianna and Ricky Ponting to visit the very special patients in the oncology ward at Sydney Children’s Hospital.
The people Rianna and Ricky met that day left an indelible impression - the dedication shown by the hospital’s doctors, nurses and staff; the love and compassion unfalteringly demonstrated by the patients’ families; and most importantly the courage of the children who were each facing the biggest challenge of their lives - a challenge bigger than most of us will ever experience.
It quickly became apparent to Rianna and Ricky that if they were able to play a part in easing the burden on these children and their families, then they must do so. After leaving the Children’s hospital, with tears in their eyes they made a commitment to one another to do everything in their power to make a real difference to children experiencing cancer and their families.
Rianna and Ricky worked tirelessly for five years as ambassadors of the CCIA. Together with the CCIA they raised more than five million dollars to fund vital research into the early detection of relapse in children diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), the most common cancer in children.
Rianna and Ricky realised that they were in a unique position to do even more to improve the lives of children with cancer by establishing a Foundation in their name dedicated to the cause. In an effort to make a real difference, Rianna and Ricky established the Ponting Foundation.
